Expanded Concealed Weapon Permit Reciprocity

Columbia — South Carolina has amended Section 23-31-215, Code of Laws, 1976, providing automatic recognition of concealed weapons permits issued by Georgia and North Carolina notwithstanding other reciprocity requirements set forth in the Code of Laws.  The amended provides for reciprocity with still other states, subject to the requirements that the reciprocal state obligates a permit applicant to successfully complete a criminal background check and to pass an approved course in firearm training and safety. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) shall furthermore establish and publish a list of those states as the states with which South Carolina has reciprocity.  A resident of a reciprocal state carrying a concealed weapon under permit of that state in South Carolina is subject to and must conform with the concealable weapons laws of South Carolina. The bill amending the statutory provision was signed into law by the Governor on June 3, 2016.
